Pressure Ulcers (Decubitus)

Imaging for potential pressure ulcers

Pressure ulcers are a common problem in any situation where patients are compromised because of immobility, nutrition, incontinence, or age. They are very painful and very costly. Prevention measures such as pressure relief aids, specialised beds, and mattresses are expensive and therefore cannot be used for every patient. Targeting the pressure relief is a much more cost effective way to manage this problem. By having advanced knowledge at the time of admission that a pressure ulcer is forming or by regular checks on patients known to be at risk, the caregiver can take the appropriate steps to prevent its development.

Easy and quick to use, the Episcan dermal and soft tissue ultrasound scanner can protect patients from pressure ulcers and hospitals and care homes from unnecessary costs and liability claims.  It can also help in the management of existing pressure sores and detect wound undermining.

Phototherapy for pressure ulcers

Phototherapy is now used for a wide variety of conditions and the treatment of chronic wounds such as decubitus is one area where it can be especially effective.  Just a short daily treatment without pain or distress to the patient can have a remarkable effect in stimulating even very long term, stubborn wounds to heal.

The latest non-laser devices from Switzerland do not require special eye protection or training and can be used safely and simply in open ward situations.  Treatment areas are generous (up to 40cm diameter) so large wound areas can be treated quickly and evenly.  Apart from obvious relief to the patient, the saving in the carer's  time and resources can be considerable if pressure sores are dealt with promptly and efficiently and the reputation of the institution is enhanced.
